Michael had a funny experience with a visitor over the summer. A young man right out of college visited us in worship one day. That initiated a conversation between him and Michael. The young man explained that he grew up in a UCC church, and was new to Philly. Eventually, he got around to the question, “Do you know any churches that have done well in gathering young adults, besides the contemporary worship evangelical ones?” Michael laughed, and responded, “I would say we have, but I guess the Sunday you visited, it wasn’t very obvious.”
For a myriad of reasons and others we may not know, our young adults have been in shorter supply lately. More than just summer. Michael has written to them about this, mostly to hear from them if they have any suggestions for how our ministry might be improved to meet their needs. He heard back from a surprising number of people, but not with suggested changes we might make. Instead, people shared the personal reasons and situations that have kept them out of church.
Not sure what else to do, Michael decided he would try to get them together and help them get back to their coming-to-church habit. So he invited them all over to his house for Sunday Supper on Sept 23. Hopefully, this will be the help or inspiration they need. Oh, and the young visitor will be there too. (As with all events at church, if you want to join us, even if you do not consider yourself a young adult, just let Michael know).
