Delicious German Food (on its way…)

Anniversary Sunday, Sept. 27th, begins our yearlong celebration of our church’s 300 years. We are beginning the Anniversary celebration by honoring our founders, the Reformed German immigrant folk from the Palatinate who arrived in Philadelphia in 1727 and founded our church.

Worship that Sunday will have a distinctively German feel. It’s not very often that German is spoken in our worship these days, but this seems like a good occasion.

The German flavor of the day will continue on during the celebration meal afterwards. Instead of the usual first potluck of the church program year, we will have a catered picnic lunch.

Our people will be on barbecues grilling bratwurst, some hotdogs for the kids,  and some vegetarian alternatives for the non-meat eaters.

The rest of the meal will be catered by Canstatter’s Volkfest Verein up on Academy Road in the Northeast. Oh, and Kathy S. is dedicated to making sure we include a German dessert from Haegele’s, an authentic German bakery in Frankford. You might have noticed that Fellowship Hour each week for the last 3 has included a different “kuchen” from Haegele’s…

Our menu will include: Gurkensalat (cucumber salad), Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad), Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes),  Spaetzel (Swabian egg noodles),  Rotkohl (red cabbage), Brezeln (German pretzels, different from Philly pretzels!) and Sauerkraut.

In Prayer Group a couple of weeks ago, we decided we should probably have dinner at Cannstater’s to check out the food (like a wedding couple having a tasting at prospective Reception venues!)  Kathy, Ellie S., Rae and Bruce, Toni, Susana, Shelley L., Michael and Leo went for dinner last Thursday. We were impressed…
