Looking for an Easter Morning Cooking Crew (also a Dishwashing Crew)…
The timing of the move-in of Old First House’s first new residents is such that our first invitation for them to join us will be on Easter.
As I have said all along, it will turn out that some of the residents, we hope, will become involved in church life. But many will not – because they belong to different religious communities; because they are not religious; because they aren’t looking for the kinds of social interactions we offer. And other reasons we haven’t even thought of. That’s fine.
But we mean to be inviting / welcoming… as well as – with great understanding and compassion – giving them enough space. I mean, living right by a church can be a lot! I have 18 of my 36 years in ministry to attest to that…
We’ll invite them to Easter Breakfast, independent of their own faith stance, and with no expectation that they attend either the earlier or later service (which of course they are free to join, if they wish). It’s just an invite for them to join us for breakfast on a Christian Holiday.
I’d like to make it a sort of special Easter Breakfast therefore. And we hope to have 34 guests who won’t have brought a covered dish, so we might need a bit more food than usual. (Look for more details in another, upcoming article from Suzanne / the Community Life SLG.)
So on top of the lovely potluck food Old Firsters brings to share, I thought we’d see if we could get a crew to make homemade pancakes and bacon that morning. Get started about 8 am to serve from 9:30 to 10:45 am. I think I need about 5 to 7 people.
I’d been thinking about this as a “Men’s Pancake Breakfast.” But one of you pointed out, in times like ours when gender is so often being used as a dividing wedge, do we want to be “gender-based”? Good point.
So let’s call this “Easter Breakfast Prepared by the Folks who are Less Frequently in our Kitchen!” It’s a holiday for our regular cooks (though they are welcome to bring a covered dish from home). And let’s see if we can get some new folks in their to make the pancakes and bacon. (Hopefully, even if you aren’t a regular around Old First’s kitchen, you might be able to mix some batter or flip a flap jack or cook bacon in the oven!)
I am working on assembling the cooking crew; if you are interested, please speak to me.
Also, there’s always some need for clean up, and on Easter, it’s complicated because the meal is before the major service. We’re not sure yet if people will clean up during the 11 am service or afterwards, but if you might be able to help out, let me know that too.
Thanks,
Michael
